Red Carpet Recap: Get the look

This past weekend was the 84th annual Academy Awards; the most buzzed about time of year when the stars radiate effortless elegance on the red carpet from everything from their pout to their pumps. Here we share with you a few of our favorite A-list celebs from the event and how you can use Sigma Beauty products to re-create their stunning red carpet looks!

Emma Stone rocked the classic cat eye with a subtle wash of a violet hue on the lid. To get this enticing eye look, simply apply a very light dusting of ‘allure’ from the FLARE Palette all over the lid, right up to the brow bone. With an eye liner brush (try the E05) and a black gel liner, draw a firm stroke along the lash line, making a light flick upwards when you reach the outer corner. It’s just that simple to achieve this classy chic look!

Rooney Mara looked striking with strong brows and a timeless red lip. To replicate her bold brow look, use a small angle brush, such as the E65, and coat the brush with a dark brown shade; we love the shade ‘hitch’ from the BARE Palette. We held a poll here in the Sigma Beauty office to find out which brushes the ladies simply couldn’t live without. The catch? They could only choose the five they thought were most essential for creating an everyday look. After compiling everyone’s answers, here are the brushes that made the top five:

Flat Top Synthetic Kabuki (F80) – This brush turned out to be the majority of everyone’s go-to foundation brush for its ability to evenly buff on foundation for a clean, flawless finish. Runner up? The F84!

Large Powder (F30) – The F30 contains large, dense bristles for application of powder products to set and keep foundation in place all day. Perfect for creating a matte finish on skin!

Large Angled Contour (F40) – The angle of the F40 makes for easy application of blush, bronzer and/or highlighter to enhance and define cheekbones.

Meet Caitlin; the 18-year-old makeup maven behind the increasingly popular YouTube channel, Glamourista16. While surfing the web one rainy day on vacation, Caitlin (16 at the time), discovered the massive amount of beauty tutorials and product review amongst YouTube. Her fascination was instantly sparked and it wasn’t long after that Glamourista16 was born. Caitlin currently boasts more than 70,000 YouTube subscribers with an audience comprised of females ranging in ages 14-22.

Sigma Beauty: Describe your experience at the Sigma Beauty photo shoot.

Glamourista16: I had the best time! First, Shauna (the marketing manager) gave me a tour of the Sigma Beauty office. It was really cool to see all the products and where they are stored and sent out from. After the tour, Bria, the makeup artist and hair stylist (who is incredibly talented!), did my hair and makeup and we were ready to shoot! It was really easy to be comfortable as everyone was so fun... and I got to wear a comfy robe!

Sigma Beauty: What did you like best about participating in a collaboration with Sigma Beauty?

Glamourista16: The best part was that I was able to participate in a shoot with one of my all time favorite beauty companies! The 'Fake It' Makeup

Do you occasionally find yourself wanting to go without makeup but just can’t get over the idea of not wearing any? We’re giving you our six simple steps for creating a put-together look without looking over done. Great for those days you don’t feel like getting all dolled up, or perfect for when you’re short on time!

Even out skin tone by applying a tinted moisturizer or sheer foundation. Use the F80 for a seamless application.
Conceal any blemishes or dark circles your tinted moisturizer didn’t cover. The P80 does just the trick!
Give cheeks a light application of blush, sweeping across the apples up to the hairline with the F84. Pro tip: To create a natural-looking flush, the shade you use should be that of your natural lip color.
Brighten eyes by applying a highlighting powder to the inner corners and under the arch of your brow. Use the shade ‘elope’ or ‘approach’ from the Sigma Beauty Bare Eye Shadow Palette and apply with the P84.
To further enhance eyes, apply 1-2 coats of mascara.
Lastly, swipe on a lightly tinted lip balm or clear gloss to finish the look.

The Perfect "Be Mine" Makeup

It’s Valentine’s weekend! Do you have a special date planned? Even if you don’t have a certain someone to spend this year’s V-day with, you can still get gorgeous with our tips for looking your loveliest!

- Radiate! Prior to makeup application, give your face a good exfoliating treatment. Next, mix a small amount of illuminating serum into your tinted moisturizer and evenly apply. Voilà - instant faux glow!

- Get cheeky. Give the apples of your cheeks a sweep of light pink for a rosy and natural-looking flush. The F40 is your go-to brush!

- Nothing says pucker up more than a seductive pout. Go bold with a fire red lip. (Check out this blog post on how to get the perfect, mess-free application).

- Easy on the eyes. Pair your vibrant pout with a subtle smokey eye. Use a balanced combination of “act”, “hitch” and “control” from the Bare palette for a stunning end-result, making sure to use the right eye brushes when applying.

Beauty Through the Ages

As we age, so does our skin. To stay looking fresh from year to year, it’s important to change our skin care routine as well as our makeup techniques. While getting older is inevitable, we’ve provided our key tips for looking your best no matter what your age!

In your teens and 20s…

The late teens and 20s are all about preserving youthfulness. The main focus is on damage prevention; how your skin will look several years down the road is dependent on how you take care of it now. You’ve probably heard it a million times, but a simple (and essential) step in age prevention is sunscreen. Don’t rely solely on the SPF from your foundation; use a daily moisturizer with SPF 30 in addition. Making sure to apply SPF to your hands and neck as well is just as important – these areas display the first signs of aging. Your 20s are also a prime time to get away with experimenting with bright and bold eye colors, such as these or these!

In your 30s…

In your 30s, skin slowly becomes thinner and finer from loss of elasticity. There is also a potential loss of collagen, as well as a slowdown in cell turnover, which can leave your complexion looking a little on the dull side. To counteract this, simply exfoliate weekly. We love the Cleansing and Polishing Tool for that! Try to use face creams and serums containing retinol or glycolic acid – ingredients shown to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The 30s are a great time to use bold lip colors balanced with neutral tones on the eyes, like those in the Bare Palette.

In your 40s and beyond…

When you reach forty, there is a further loss of collagen and elasticity, skin retains less moisture and hyper-pigmentation may be visible. Sun spots may also be evident. Face products with light-reflecting particles will help to make skin look healthy and fresh. Applying highlighter on the cheeks and brow bones is essential to bring out the face’s natural features. It’s important, however, to steer clear of sparkly and shimmery eye products as they can accentuate fine lines. Get a facial every 6 to 8 weeks to stimulate cell renewal and achieve a youthful glow. A beauty expert in the world of YouTube, Allison is highly recognized for her channel, “Amarixe.” In 2009, the wide array of beauty videos on YouTube sparked her interest and thus Amarixe was created (a combination of her first and middle name). Allison is in her senior year of college pursuing a degree in psychology and communication with a newly found interest in broadcast since starting her channel. She has always been interested in makeup and "Amarixe" has allowed her to share that interest with other beauty fans. Read on to learn more!

Sigma Beauty: What made you decide to start your own YouTube channel?
Amarixe: I was home from college for the summer when I stumbled across the beauty community on YouTube. I’ve always been really into makeup, but had never found such a large group of people who shared my same interest. After a couple month of watching videos, I knew I wanted to get more involved in the community, so I created my own channel! It is definitely one of the best decisions I ever made.

Sigma Beauty: What is the best piece of beauty advice you’ve ever received?
Amarixe: It’s hard to pinpoint one piece of advice as the best, but I think the tip I’ve used the most is to apply a light brown shade through the crease prior to darker crease colors in order to make blending easier. It’s a simple step, but it makes a world of difference!

Sigma Beauty: Is there a beauty mistake you’ve made but have learned from?
Amarixe: As a teenager, I didn’t take a lot of time to blend my eye shadow. I don’t think I even realized that is something you should pay attention to! I cringe at the thought of what my non-blended crease must have looked like... never again!

Sigma Beauty: What are a few of your favorite Sigma Beauty products?
Amarixe: Lately I’ve really been loving the Mrs. Bunny Essential Kit; the colors are adorable and the hairs are so soft! I also can’t live without my E40 blending brush - I use it every single day.

Sigma Beauty: Where do you find your inspiration to create new looks and stay on trend?
Amarixe: I’ve learned to look for inspiration everywhere! Aside from typical sources such as magazines and other media, I find myself also inspired by seasonal weather or beautiful photographs. The best thing about makeup is that it is art, and there is never a “wrong” way to go about expressing yourself!

Amarixe: I love wearing neutral eye shadows with a really dark outer crease; I find that it makes my eyes look bigger and more defined! Winged liner and a bright lip is always fun, too.

Sigma Beauty: Can you tell us a few fun facts people might not know about you?
Amarixe: I lived in the Philippines for a few years when I was growing up. It was by far the best experience of my life to date. Being immersed in a culture so different from my own taught me some really valuable things. I’ve also played the piano since I was five years old, and my favorite TV show is Lost.

Amarixe: When choosing which products and trends to review, I ask myself if the content is something I would be interested in seeing in my own subscription box. If it isn’t, my audience probably won’t be interested either!

Amarixe: Hopefully a lot more of me! I graduate college this spring, after which I will have much more time to dedicate to my YouTube channels and blog. I think the best thing about YouTube and the beauty industry is you never know which trends or new products are around the corner, so everything is always fresh. I have no idea what people will be seeing on my channel a year from now, but I think that’s what is so exciting about it!

Natural vs. Synthetic – what’s the difference?

When it comes to makeup brushes, there are two kinds: natural and synthetic. So how do you know which one to choose? Here we’ve summarized the differences for you!

Natural bristled-brushes hold product extremely well and are best suited for building color. The bristles hold powder products most effectively because of the cuticle on the hair, which helps to keep the makeup on the brush until you apply it. For that reason, professionals tend to prefer natural brushes over synthetic ones.

Sigma Beauty’s synthetic bristled-brushes utilize the Sigmax HD filament that is 100% man-made. These brushes rarely shed, if ever at all, and are a perfect fit for someone who chooses to use vegan-friendly products. Pretty Pout Perfection

Do you love the look of lipstick but aren't exactly sure of how to properly apply? We’re here to help!
When it comes to wearing lipstick, achieving the perfect pout involves preparation, proper application and some essential final steps. This is especially important if you are using bold and vibrant colors.

Prep – First and foremost, you need to make sure lips are exfoliated. Exfoliated lips will guarantee smooth application of lipstick. It’s also a good idea to apply a light layer of concealer and loose translucent powder around the mouth to keep lipstick from bleeding. The Synthetic Precision Tapered brush (P86) is a perfect tool for that!

Application – To make lipstick stay put, start by lining the lips with a lip liner and lightly fill in the lips. This creates a base for the lipstick to adhere to. Next comes the lipstick. It’s important to use a lip brush to achieve precise placement and even distribution when applying.

Note: For those with thinner lips, stray from using darker lipstick shades as those may make lips appear even thinner.

Luxe Lashes

Creating voluminous lashes is the finishing touch in perfecting your makeup routine. It’s also the easiest way to make eyes appear larger to provide an eye-brightening effect. Here are our simple steps for creating long and luxurious-looking lashes!

First, gently curl lashes using a lash curler, holding lashes taut for approximately 5-10 seconds. Repeat once or twice. Pro tip: To get the most intense curl possible, blast the lash curler with hot air using a blow dryer prior to curling. Think of it as a mini curling iron for your lashes!

Second, apply mascara. If you are going for a more natural look, opt for clear or brown mascara. For the most intensity, use a dark black. While applying mascara, start at the base of the lashes and use a back-and-forth motion while working the wand up to get every lash. Apply 2-3 coats to give lashes the length and definition desired, waiting approximately 15 seconds in between coats. Consider applying mascara to the lower lashes first to prevent getting mascara on your upper lid. If you do happen to accidentally get any of the mascara on your skin, quickly use a q-tip to wipe it away before it dries.

Lastly, make eyelashes appear thicker by using a secret of the pros called tight-lining. Simply apply a fine line of dark brown or black eye shadow (like "hitch" or "control" from our Bare Palette) directly along the lash line using an angled brush. This creates the illusion of more hair at the roots.

To create really dramatic eyes, take it one step further by applying false lashes. (We love YouTube guru TiffanyD’s tutorial on how to properly apply)!

Tiffany, most commonly known for her YouTube channel, MakeupByTiffanyD, is a long-time Sigma Beauty collaborator. She’s produced several Sigma Beauty tutorials and informed beauty consumers of the exceptional functionality and quality of our products.

Tiffany started making YouTube videos in 2008 as a fun and informative outlet for beauty lovers alike. She has since been receiving a considerable amount of followers and fans. We recently chatted with Tiffany to answer ten of your most pressing questions for the acclaimed beauty guru! Check it out:

Sigma Beauty: What originally inspired you to get involved with makeup?

Tiffany: I've always loved makeup as far back as I can remember. When friends would come over, we'd play "makeover" instead of Barbie dolls. I started wearing it in high school and realized I must have been pretty good at it because I'd always be the one who did all of my friends' makeup for dances or events. It has always been fun to me. People dream of doing something for a living they truly love, and makeup was always at the top of my list.

Sigma Beauty: What are your top three favorite Sigma Beauty products?

Tiffany: The Sigmax Angled Kabuki, the Make Me Up Kits, and the Dry'n Shape.

Sigma Beauty: What is the best piece of beauty advice you’ve ever received?

Tiffany: Years ago when I had seriously over-plucked my eyebrows, I read something that said to let them grow out for a month without touching them. So I did, and it saved them. Ever since, I’ve been super careful about not over-plucking.

Sigma Beauty: If you could do makeup for any one celebrity, who would it be and why?

Tiffany: I would love to see what Kim Kardashian's real eye lashes really look like. But she has gorgeous eyes, so it would definitely be her.

Sigma Beauty: What’s your advice for all of the aspiring makeup artists/YouTube gurus out there?

Tiffany: Not to take other people's advice [laughs]. Don’t pay attention to what other people are doing at all. Do it because you want to and make it your own. Never compare yourself to other people or think you should model your career or YouTube channel after anyone else. Getting into makeup artistry and making a career out of it is incredibly different for everyone - no two paths are alike. I think the biggest mistake I see with people on YouTube trying to make it "big" is just that. Don't try to make it "big" because if you get into it for that reason, it just won't happen. If you're doing it for the right reasons and because you genuinely love it and want to share something you love with others, people will see your authenticity and want to watch.

Sigma Beauty: What is the one piece of beauty advice you think all women should follow?

Tiffany: To do what works for them. Every person is different and has their own style. Take the advice and tips of others’ and make them into something that works for you.

Sigma Beauty: What has been your most rewarding experience since becoming a YouTube guru?

Tiffany: Definitely the interaction with my subscribers. So many messages I've received have really touched my heart. From women saying I completely taught them how to do makeup because they didn't have a mother or sister to show them how, to someone saying I've brought a smile to their face during a difficult time or helped them forget about a problem or disease they have for a few minutes each day. That's definitely my best type of reward.

Sigma Beauty: Who is your favorite makeup artist?

Tiffany: Honestly, I don't have one.

Sigma Beauty: What keeps you motivated to create new looks and inspire others through makeup?

Tiffany: I don't really have to try to stay motivated. I guess I'm naturally motivated because it's something I truly love, so new ideas just come naturally to me and the excitement really never goes away.

Sigma Beauty: How has your makeup routine changed over the course of your time as a guru?

Tiffany: My eyebrows! They've slowly evolved and improved [laughs]. I guess it’s because through making videos, I was forced to look at them on camera and see what I needed to do to them. So I take better care of them for sure. I've always taken care of my skin the same (I've used the same type of cleanser for ten years!) and done my makeup pretty similar over the years. Come to think of it, I've always loved buying makeup products and trying new things. I'd always find myself trying new stuff and finding better ways to use it or discover something interesting or a makeup trick and really have no one to share it with. Thus, I was inspired to make my YouTube channel, so being a guru didn't really change anything with my actual makeup routine. I'm just getting to share with others something I enjoy in my daily life anyway.

Nurturing the Neck and Décolleté

So far we have focused our blog posts on the face, but we want to highlight the importance of your neck and décolleté as well. We’ve heard from women in their 40s that this is one area they really wish they would have paid more attention to in their younger years. Believe it or not, this delicate area should receive just as much care as your face, yet it tends to get neglected.

Did you know that the neck is one of the first places on your body to show signs of aging? To help with prevention of sagging skin, wrinkles and age spots on your neck, always apply moisturizer and SPF daily. It is vital to apply a night cream to the area as well to avoid premature aging. When applying the moisturizer or cream, make sure to do so in an upward, circular motion.

Lastly, accentuate your décolleté while creating a faux glow by applying shimmer or bronzing powder across the area with a large brush, such as the Sigma Beauty Body brush (B05) or the other large powder brushes in the Extravaganza Face Kit!

New Year’s is celebrated in a variety of ways all around the world. Some people eat special foods, wear certain clothes, make resolutions, or engage in other traditions. It is most common to ring in the New Year with enthusiastic hopes for good luck, love and prosperity, among other good fortunes. Here we’ve highlighted a few of our favorite New Year’s traditions from around the globe.

United States – The U.S. New Year’s tradition is the dropping of the crystal ball in Times Square in New York City at 11:59 p.m., Dec. 31. At midnight it is common to make a toast with champagne and to kiss your significant other. Many people create New Year resolutions in hopes of making positive changes for the new year.

France – The New Year's in France is referred to as, “la Saint-Sylvestre.” Champagne or sparkling white wine is the drink of choice to share among friends on New Year's Eve. The Eiffel Tower is illuminated with spotlights and a renowned fireworks display is set off at midnight.

Spain – The long-standing Spanish ritual on New Year's Eve is to eat twelve grapes at midnight. The tradition is meant to secure twelve happy months in the coming year; sweet grapes represent good months, while sour grapes imply difficult months.

Brazil – The New Year in Brazil, or “Ano Novo,” marks the beginning of the summer holidays. It is tradition to wear all white and gold or silver. Rio de Janeiro is regarded as the location of one of the best fireworks displays in the world during New Year’s Eve along the Copacabana beach.

Japan – Considered one of the most important holidays, many business shut down from Jan. 1 – Jan. 3 in Japan to celebrate New Year's. Many people visit shrines or temples. It is also tradition to eat buckwheat noodles - a food that symbolizes longevity. Each new year provides a fresh start and is considered a time of renewal.

Beautiful Brows

Many women often forget about their eyebrows in their daily beauty routine, or are simply at a loss for how to groom them. Considering eyebrows can really impact your look, we want to emphasize how to achieve beautiful brows to keep you looking your best!

The first thing to do is brush them out. (Quick tip: If you don’t own a brow brush, you can use a disposable mascara wand). This allows you to pin point the out-of-place hairs that need to be plucked or trimmed.

From there, the first area to tweeze is the space between eyebrows. To determine where to start, take a pencil and hold it parallel to the side of your nose. Where the brush meets your brow is where your brow should begin (about parallel to the inner corner of your eye).

For the area underneath the brow, tweeze hairs under your arch in the direction they grow while holding skin taut. Note: never over-tweeze! Eyebrows don’t always grow back the same after being plucked so it’s best to tweeze slowly and carefully, ensuring you’re tweezing the right amount.

To define eyebrows, fill them in with a brow pencil or powder. We love using “hitch” from the Sigma Beauty Bare Palette as a brow-filler. Simply dampen the Sigma Beauty Small Angle brush E65, dip in the shadow and apply it to areas of brows that need a bit more color using light, feathery strokes.

Final tips:

- Situate yourself next to a window that provides natural light prior to tweezing

- Use a magnifying mirror

- Make sure your tweezers are sharp and have a slanted edge

- To keep tweezers clean, periodically wipe with rubbing alcohol

- Accentuate your brow bone by applying a highlighting powder directly under brow (as we mentioned back in our "Conquering Contouring and Hints on Highlighting” post)

- Keep your brows in place all day with a brow gel. If you don’t have any, you can apply a dab of hairspray to your finger and use it to keep unruly hairs in place.

So there you have it – the basics of achieving beautiful brows. What tricks do you have for keeping your eyebrows well-groomed?

For your convenience, we’ve categorized our different types of eye brushes and given you a brief description of what they can do to help you perfect your eye makeup application!

· Angled – Angled brushes are best suited to apply gel or cream eyeliner along the lash line, or for filling in brows with powder.

'Tis the season...

… to alter your beauty routine! With the change of seasons also means the change of your skin care routine. This is especially important for those who live in climates where winter can wreak havoc on skin. Here’s our guide to keep your skin looking healthy this frigid time of year.

Stay healthy and hydrated. Just like summer, it is equally important to drink adequate amounts of water throughout the year to keep your skin hydrated. It’s also important to ensure that you’re still getting your daily recommended amount of fruits and vegetables; the vitamins and minerals help skin stay looking and feeling healthy.

Keep on cleansing. Cleansing remains an essential, everyday part of a skin care routine no matter what the season. However, switching to a mild, cream-based cleanser is a wise idea since gel cleansers and bar soaps may strip your skin of natural oils that are especially beneficial in winter.

Easy on the exfoliants. While exfoliating should still be an essential part of your skin routine during winter, you may find that your skin is more sensitive this time of year because of the dry, cold air. It is best to exfoliate less often, or with a more gentle scrub or tool. (Opt for the soft brush head when using the Sigma Beauty Cleansing and Polishing Tool).

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! We can’t emphasize this enough. A good moisturizer is vital for keeping skin supple and smooth. If your skin can handle it, switch out your water-based moisturizers in favor of oil-based ones; they’re ideal for keeping the skin soft and silky, and are better suited for protecting skin from the harsh outdoor elements. Also consider using a hydrating mask once a week.

Slather on the SPF. The sun’s rays can be very harmful in the winter months because of the glare that reflects off the snow’s white surface and onto your face. Apply an SPF of at least 30 to all exposed areas of skin before going outside (this should be done daily year-round!) Not only are you protecting yourself from redness, but you’re also delaying the signs of aging.

Give your lips some love! In addition to moisturizing your skin, your lips call for special care as well. Invest in a lip balm rich in moisturizing ingredients like shea butter, beeswax, or mineral oil.

Although blush may seem like a no-brainer when it comes to application, some women are unaware of the effect blush can have. Today we’re pointing out the various ways to apply blush and addressing the technique that will work best for your face shape in order to achieve the perfect look for you.

First off, let’s briefly touch on the various kinds of blush: powder, gel and cream.

Powder is the most common and easiest to use – best for beginners; cream is easily blendable - best for dry skin; gel provides a sheer tint but can be hard to blend – best for those with smooth skin.

As for color, rose hues are best for fair skin, apricot works great for medium skin tones and deep reds are perfect for dark skin. Peach is a universally flattering color.

*If you use powder or mineral blush, you can add a bit of bronzer to produce a warm hue.

When it comes to choosing a brush, our top picks for blush application are the Sigma Beauty Powder/Blush Brush (F10) and the Sigma Beauty Large Angled Contour (F40).

There are a few different ways to apply blush. The general way is to start on the apple of the cheeks and blend upward towards the hairline, then downwards to ensure a well-blended and thorough application. There are, however, application variations to use based on the shape of your face.

If you have a thin face and want your cheeks to appear more prominent, apply blush more so on the apples and lightly on the cheek bones.

If you have a round face that you want to appear thinner, apply more so along the cheek bone and less on the apples.

Conquering Contouring & Hints on Highlighting

Alright, let’s talk highlight and contour; the timeless trick to accent bone structure and create natural looking shadows to produce an overall slimming effect. Many women tend to be at a loss on how to go about the application process and leave this step out of their daily makeup routine. Luckily, we're here to help!

To summarize, contouring involves the use of darker shades to create the illusion of a shadow, making areas of the face appear slimmer; highlighter is light powder used to call attention to areas that you want to appear more prominent, such as the brow and cheekbones.

What you’ll need:

- a taupe blush or matte bronzer one to two shades darker than skin tone for contouring

- a light powder for highlighting (you can even use the fair-shaded powders from the Sigma Beauty Eye Shadow Palette in "Bare", shown above)

- an angled brush, such as the Sigma Beauty F40 or F84

Once you’ve applied your foundation, it’s time to contour.

To enhance the cheekbones, locate the hollows of your cheek. Apply your contouring powder starting at the hollows, working upwards towards the hairline in small, circular motions to avoid creating a harsh, unrealistic line. Although contouring the cheeks is the most common place of application, you can lightly apply your contouring powder along your jawline or sides of nose for a slimming effect, too.

From there, apply your blush as usual.

After contouring and blush application, gently wisp a highlighting powder over the top of the cheekbones up to the temples. Also apply highlighter directly under your eyebrow to accentuate the brow bone, using a smaller angled brush like the Sigma Beauty Medium Angled Shading brush (E70). To brighten eyes, apply the highlighter to the inner corners.

Brush Care Basics

Not only is it important to wash your makeup brushes to rid them of bacteria and cosmetic products, but also to extend their life. We advise a thorough washing every 1-2 weeks, and spot cleaning in-between when need be. Here’s our step-by-step quick guide on how to go about the washing and drying process to get the most out of your brushes:

1.    First, wet brush heads, but do not submerge entire brush in water
2.    Work a small amount of cleanser into the bristles, washing thoroughly but gently with warm water until brush is fully clean (baby shampoo works in place of a brush cleaner if you do not have one)
3.    Squeeze out excess water from brush
4.    Lastly, place your clean, damp brushes into the Sigma Beauty Dry’n Shape, making sure all bristles are firmly compressed

Makeup is always in contact with your eyes, mouth, face and fingers which can make your products breeding grounds for bacteria and contamination. That’s why it’s so important to take proper care of your beauty items and replace them when need be. For your convenience, we’ve come up with a time-to-toss cosmetic quick guide!

Replace…

· Moisturizers, serums and cleansers every 6-12 months

· Foundation every 9-12 months

· Powder products (face, blush and bronzer) every 18 months

· Eye shadow every 18-24 months

· Mascara every 2-3 months

· Eyeliner every 6-9 months

· Lip products every 12 months

When it comes to makeup brushes, they can last for years if they are taken proper care of. Make sure to wash your brushes at least once every 1-2 weeks. Bye, Bye Bags & Blemishes!

Last week we talked about achieving flawless foundation application, but sometimes foundation just isn’t enough for covering up those stubborn under-eye bags, puffiness, dark spots and blemishes. Thankfully, we have some advice on how to solve these pesky problems!

One age-old trick we love is cucumbers! Each morning, gently place two cold cucumber slices on your eyes for approximately 30-60 seconds to reduce puffiness. (Metal spoons work just as well!)

As for concealer and corrector, these can be applied before or after your foundation, or a little bit of both! It is typical to apply under-eye concealer prior to foundation application, and spot-treat blemishes and dark spots afterwards.

For brightening the eye area, invest in a good concealer that is one to two shades lighter than your skin tone to brighten the eye area. (Apply with a concealer brush such as the ones listed down below).

To cover and disguise blemishes, use a concealer that is the same shade as your skin tone to make coverage appear natural. Color-tinted concealers can come in hand for trouble-shooting specific problems;

- Green-tinted concealer masks redness associated with acne and rosacea

- Yellow-based concealer hides dark under eye circles and other bluish skin discolorations

Finally, set your concealed spots and areas with sheer, loose powder.

Finding Your Way to Flawless Foundation...

Foundation is an essential step in the makeup application process, but many women struggle on finding the formula, shade or application method that is best for them. Here’s our suggestions for helping you buy and apply the foundation that is right for you. Get ready to achieve that flawless-faced look that you’re always after!

For starters – what’s the right foundation formula for you?

Foundation comes in many forms – liquid, mineral, compact powder, and cream (among others) so no wonder it can be such as task to figure out which one to buy! It might take some experimenting to find the formula that’s right for you, but here’s some pointers to help you get started:

· Liquid foundation hydrates, smoothes and provides medium to full-coverage. Great for all skin types.

· Mineral foundation goes on light, providing medium coverage. Best for normal to oily skin.

· Compact powder foundation gives light to medium coverage and is ideal for normal, combination, and oily skin.

· Cream foundation goes on smooth, providing medium to full coverage. Best for dry to normal skin.

*Always make sure to purchase oil-free products if you have oily skin or are prone to breakouts.

The second step in finding a foundation right for you is making sure to get the shade that best matches your skin tone. To get the just-right shade, do the following:

· Test the foundation color along your jawline, not on your hand like you might have been told in the past (your hand may yield a different color than your face)

· If possible, take home a few samples to try out; cosmetic counters in department stores will often offer a variety of samples for you to take home and test

· See yourself with the foundation on in natural light to make sure it’s the right shade

· Adjust the shade you choose based on the season and your daily exposure to sunlight

The last step is application, which really comes down to preference in terms of the tool you use. Depending on the type of formula, there are a variety of brushes to choose from.

We hear a lot of women complaining about uneven, dull-looking skin. That’s why we’ve come up with a list of our personal top tips for revealing your natural radiance!

1.) Exfoliate weekly, cleanse daily. Exfoliating removes the build-up of dead skin cells that accumulate on your face - the culprit of lack-luster skin. Making sure to exfoliate one to two times every week will brighten your skin's appearance. (The Sigma Cleansing and Polishing Tool is just what you need!) Apart from exfoliation, cleansing each day is important to remove makeup and your face’s daily accumulation of bacteria, sweat, dirt and oil.

2.) Tone. A toner removes the excess oil and bacteria that your cleanser might have left behind. A toner can also help to restore the skin’s natural pH balance and are especially helpful for those with oily skin. A splash of cold water can be used in addition to toner to aid in shrinking the appearance of pores.

3.) Moisturize. Moisturizing makes the skin appear soft, supple and hydrated. It can also temporarily eliminate the appearance of fine lines, which ensures a smooth surface prior to applying foundation.

4.) Protect. Dark spots and lines are a direct result of sun exposure. Making sure to use SPF daily, staying out of the sun as much as possible, and wearing protective sunglasses are some of the smartest things you can do for your skin. Start now and your youthful looking self will thank you many years down the road!

5.) Hydrate. Drink 8-10 glasses of water every day to flush out toxins. Without proper hydration, skin can become dry and flaky, resulting in a lack of resilience and an overall dull appearance. Need we say more? - Drink up!

So there you have it – our top tips for achieving healthy skin! Following these tips on a regular basis will not only have your skin looking its best, but will also provide a proper base for flawless makeup application.

Aside from these five key tips, we also advise cutting back on alcohol and caffeine, and never smoke! But of course you already knew that, right? ;)
